INTERNET PROBLEM RESOLUTION

This information is to assist problem resolution of OSD-Net.

There are two connection types ..

Local: Campus to Telco LATA-5 GTE (ultimately back to the District Office)
Remote: District Office to Telco LATA-5 GTE (and back to CSU Los Alamitos)

GTE is in Newbury Park for our direct connections from each site.

Campus, here, means Fremont, Cesar Chavez, OSD, CSU Los Al

Cisco Router ..
- Connects Ethernet at 10 Mbits to PCs, MACs, etc, via AUI connector
- Ensures what packet users can cross the border by user and type
- Connects over High Speed Serial (Fractional T-1, 1.544 MBit) Line at 128 KBit (fraction) at schools
- Connects over High Speed Serial (Fractional T-1, 1.544 MBit) Line at 384 KBit (fraction) Dist Office outward to Cal State
- Is known to be working when its Green Lights flash their regular pattern and internal admin commands show that the interface is up. "show interface serial 0"
- Is failing intermittent to continuously when console messages on the console or local Unix (syslog) host report DLCI is up/down, ...
CSU / DSU (Customer Service Unit / Digital Service Unit) connects
- With Cisco HS Serial port
- With Telco Line Adapter in phone closet
- Interfaces with the slower fractional T1 service connection 128/384K
- Is known to be working when its CS light is solid, TD and RD are flashing.
- Is known to be down when ALM or LOS lights come up.
Good trouble shooting begins with comparison of notes with a user at a campus as well as the DO .. then involve the phone company if indicated (or Rey, Ev or Richard, site principal/tech person).

Trouble shooting at CISCO .. know serial number or and contract

BE SURE TO CHECK

The steps before entering a complaint with the wrong office.

I. ON SITE / CAMPUS

Verify (1) CSU/DSU,

(2) Cisco (log in if needed),

(3) Compare with next hop up the ladder

"Campus -> OSD" or "OSD -> CSU".

II. CISCO

Only if a Cisco failure is clearly indicated or need help with GTE,

Is only indicated when we can not get in or out of the district reliably.

Then ..send a traceroute noc@csu.net and call their CSU Trouble Desk.
